Fears & Phobias

I am yet to meet anyone who doesn’t have a phobia of some kind. As irrational as they sometimes appear, phobias are a key element of our DNA. They help protect us from perceived dangers and preserve a state of good health.

From time to time, however, phobias can have a massive impact on the quality of our lives, causing unnecessary anxiety where there is no reason for the response.

Physiological responses to a phobia

The response to a phobia is similar to that of a panic attack or other distressed situation. As the phobia manifests, you are likely to see signs of:

  • Trembling
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Increased heart rate or palpitations
  • Shortness of breath and difficulty talking

Phobias are common amongst everyone but such symptoms can be a frustration when experienced on a frequent occasion. Phobias tend to develop from a young age and can be the result of an incident early in life or may stem from a more irrational – or even unidentifiable – source.

A phobia may be learned from parental or societal behaviour; it could be deemed as hereditary; or it may just be an unexplainable response to a stimulus (such as arithmophobia, or fear of numbers).

Using hypnotherapy to overcome a phobia

As with any condition that finds its root within our psychological state, my clients have often found hypnotherapy to be very effective in either managing or treating their phobias. Whilst most phobias can’t be explained, or don’t have a root cause, in exploring the psychological response to the stimulus, we are able to explore ways in which to manage your emotions, inducing a calmer state.

In using relaxation and visualisation techniques, we can work to desensitise you to the situations that create fear without actually exposing you to suffering. This can help establish new neurological responses to the perceived threat and remove the ‘flight’ response normally triggered by your phobia.

The rationality of phobias

There is often no root to your fear but this does not make it any less real. The good news is that – as this is purely a psychological result and largely irrational – we are able to effectively manage this through Neuro- Linguistic Programming (NLP) and advanced hypnosis. Retraining the mind in such instances is a very effective solution for recalibrating our psychological response.

Once you have completed our advanced hypnosis sessions, you will no longer feel the same sense of anxiety that you once felt when confronted by your deepest fears.
